reflux Reflux is a condition where the lower part of the oesophagus fails to keep food within the stomach and backflow occurs into the oesophagus. If there the food is mixed with stomach acid, there may be a burning sensation. Reflux is extremely common, affecting roughly 30% of the population. Reflux can be caused by obesity, hiatus hernia, medications, and pregnancy. Where reflux happens consistently, it is possible that some of the refluxed material backflows all the way up into the throat. From this position it is possible for the refluxed material to enter the airway. Treatment for reflux is often under the care of your local doctor who may then refer you to a Gastroenterologist. Advice regarding meal routines, meal frequency and timing of meals may help to alleviate symptoms. X-ray assessments may be required to demonstrate symptoms. (see clinics- x-ray assessment of swallowing for further information).
