adults We all take the ability to eat and drink without difficulty for granted. Difficulties with eating or drinking are often described as: - Difficulty with chewing
- Trouble with dry food (eg. bread) or chewy food (eg. meat)
- Reliance on soft foods
- Food sticking in the throat
- Choking on foods or liquids

For adults, difficulties with chewing, eating or swallowing are often related to other disorders. For example: stroke; brain injury; reflux; Parkinson's disease; Motor Neurone Disease; surgery to the mouth, throat or oesophagus; cancer of the mouth, throat or oesophagus (including chemo and radiotherapy); Dementia – including Alzheimer’s disease; Multiple Sclerosis. Further information about these conditions, and difficulties with eating and drinking, can be found under our learn section.
